Designing the Right Feed Ration for Sirohi, Boer and Their Crosses

Apr 12, 2026 5 min read

Nutrition is the silent engine driving every successful goat farm. Even goats with the best genetics will underperform if they are underfed or poorly nourished. For our Sirohi, Boer and Sirohi–Boer crossbred herd, we design precise rations tailored to each animal's life stage and purpose.

Three Variables That Drive Every Ration

  • Age & physiological stage: Different needs for kids, growers, lactating does and breeding bucks.
  • Purpose: Adjust for meat-oriented growth versus milk production or breeding maintenance.
  • Local feed availability: Use regionally accessible fodder, crop residues, concentrates and minerals.

A Typical Maintenance Ration for Adult Sirohi Goats

  • 1 to 1.5 kg of dry fodder from native shrubs such as ber, babul or local grasses.
  • 200–300 g of a concentrate mix — wheat bran, maize, gram and balanced minerals.
  • Free access to a multi-mineral lick block alongside clean, fresh water at all times.

Scaling Up for Boer & Crossbred Goats

Boer goats and Sirohi–Boer crosses are larger and grow faster, so both concentrate and total dry matter intake are increased to support superior carcass development.

During critical phases such as late pregnancy and lactation, rations are further enriched with higher energy and protein to boost milk yield and rapid kid growth.

"We advocate zero-grazing or cut-and-carry feeding — harvest and store fodder in advance to remove dependence on seasonal grazing."

Balancing Cost, Quality & Local Reality

Smart ration design isn't about expensive imported feeds — it is about combining what is locally available with the right concentrate balance for each group of animals.

Conclusion

Designing the right ration is a daily discipline — one that protects your investment in genetics and turns feed into measurable growth, fertility and profitability.
